Adding an external hard drive to HR-44

I have an HR-44 that I would like to add an external HD to. I had purchased a HD enclosure a while back and had an older HD available. Putting this older drive in to this enclosure I got a 75-559 error code upon rebooting. So I ordered another enclosure (same model) and a new hard drive. When connecting and rebooting I get the same error 75-559. I get this error when connecting via SATA. When connecting via USB the drive is not even recognized.

I have considered opening the case and replacing the internal drive with the new one, but wanted to see if anyone else experienced this issue and if and how they resolved it first.

Do NOT replace the internal drive of the HR44 as that would violate the Terms of Service. They own the receiver and client boxes so we are not allowed to open them.

DirecTV only uses eSATA for an external hard drive. The USB is for powering an external fan or the LCC (or discontinued AM21).

Unplug power from HR44. Connect external HDD and power up. Give a minute for external HDD to initialize before plugging HR44 back in.

If you still get an error message, then unplug HDD and reboot HR44. Run a system test: Menu > Settings > Info and Test > Run System Test. If you have any Clients they will not work while the test is running, just like during reboot. If no errors pull up on the HR44, then suggested plug HDD into a computer and reformat. For some reason some drives cannot be formatted by the receiver until they have be formatted by a PC first. Then connect the HDD like earlier.

Genie a while ago had a suggested max of a 4TB external. But there is no official hard cap, so some have used up to even 12TB successfully.

A regular HDDVR (HR24 and earlier) support a hard max of 2TB external. That is actually the limit. But with their internal 500GB and supporting an external, plus 2 tuners and their own processing power, they are way better than a client.

@Juniper Thank You for the reply.

After plugging external HD to my notebook and successfully formating, and still no success on the DVR I put the external enclosure with the new drive (a 10 TB) on my genie DVR which successfully formatted it and still no luck. After unplugging the DVR and enclosure and still no luck I ran the self test and noticed the DVR is NOT an HR44 but an HR24. After reading your post again it made since. Even the other drive I tried was a 3 TB.

Again Thank You for at least trying to help me and apologies for wasting your time!

No waste of time. Glad we got it figured out. If you still want to use an external on the HR24, just needs to be no larger than 2TB. Compared to the 500GB built-in, can still be worth it.

If you actually have a Genie (HR34, HR44, HR54), then the 10TB can be used there. They have a 1TB built-in.

And remember, the external is used instead of the internal. The existing recordings aren't deleted, but you cannot access them until you unplug the external and reboot. No suggested to do this often as the eSATA port in DirecTV boxes is not as sturdy as a regular computer. Not intended for swapping devices often.

Adding a new hard drive is not that hard. I worked as a technician for a very long time and this was my favorite activity.
