Can I just connect the two units with a cat5 cable??
The living room is networked via wireless (Apple Airport Express), and the second TV is directly above (upstairs), Couldn't I just run a cat5 cable from the main HDDVR up to the second floor unit? The Airport Express is plugged into the main HDDVR, then use the second ethernet outlet to go upstairs to the other HDDVR?

That should work, although it won't be supported by DirecTV and you have to sign-up and pay the $3/month fee for MRV.

You may find the playback to be less than perfect. And of course the wireless adapter doesn't handle Directv2PC very well. However, it's and easy and cheap solution so you might want to try it.

What do you mean "supported" by DirecTvV...do you mean if I have a problem? I know I have to subscribe to MRV - not trying to go around that fee.

DirecTV2PC is worthless to me...I own a Mac, and my PC's are too old. A Mac version would be awesome!
Anyways...why would playback be less than "perfect".
Thanks to both of you. I spent a while on the phone yesterday with a CSR, $160 for DTV to install and upgrade my DVR to a HD Receiver plus MVR, Or $99 to upgrade the DVR to a HD-DVR and install it myself. (Already have the one HD-DVR, this would be the second) Not sure what I'm going to do.

DirecTV will only provide service/support for their DECA-based networking with the Whole Home DVR (MRV) service. Any other do-it-yourself networking architectures, even hard wired ethernet cables, must be self-supported. And you'll pay the $3/mo fee either way. In other words, DECA is the way to go unless you're sure you can support your own high-performance home network.
