Gemini mini

There is a new "mini" type box on the Directv Website called a Gemini.  Seems, hardware wise, to be identical to the Directv Osprey Stream Box.   Does Directv Satellite charge $7 per month as an additional receiver fee for the Gemini?  What does the UI look like compared to when used with Directv Stream?

Hello @JAL123, we're glad to know you're interested in our new DIRECTV Gemini Device.

DIRECTV Gemini itself looks the same as the DIRECTV STREAM Device, and even uses the same remote control powered by Google Assistant.

It has the same interface as Genie device when you are enjoying DIRECTV service, Gemini also has easy access to streaming apps like Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon Prime and more accessing to the Google Play Store.

You can use your voice to search live TV, on demand and streaming apps. Feel free to check an overview with everything about Gemini.

We'd like to clarify that there is a monthly TV Access Fee for each DIRECTV Receiver and/or client device added on the account. In case you have any doubt we're here 24/7 to help.

Currently, The DIRECTV Gemini Device has the same TV access fee of $7 per month. Prices are subject to change

I received an email stating that "I'm first in line for the Gemini REceiver"! When I called I was told thank you for being a DirecTv customer for nearly 20 years but I do NOT qualify yet for the receiver although I meet all the other criteria..Also the person had no answers to simple questions for tme like 1. Is the remote "backlit" do I still need a "swimbox", etc. This 20 year customer is ready to cancel and go to another streaming service!

AFAIK currently the Gemini is only being tested in certain areas like Birmingham (there are 3).

Think of the Gemini device as ANY other regular wireless Genie client. It won’t change the amount of things you need plugged in or anything like that. It is simply a wireless Genie client with a new remote, access to apps, and obviously the different remote.

Is the remote backlit?

Some say their DIRECTV remote for the Gemini is backlit while others say it isn’t.

Although, you can buy a backlit remote for the Gemini device. This would be the model RC73B.

It is not yet known for certain if the Gemini remote is backlit or not. Only conflicting answers have been seen on this. You can use a backlit model of the Genie remote (RC73B) if needed.

What is required to connect the Gemini would be the same as wireless Mini Genie Clients (C41W and C61W). That means you need a Genie setup with a wireless video bridge (WVB) installed, or the Genie-2 (HS17) which has the WVB built-in. Yes, SWM is still the current tech.

I got a Gemini on their "no cost" upgrade.  I have the wired setup with an HS17.  The remote that I got is backlit.

Apparently they will be supporting this device via a WIRED connection.  Looks like a MOCA adapter in this video.

Very nice. More info on that Gemini is still comming out so learning curve for all of us.

Though wish it were an actual reciever instead of a client with limitations. I suspect it was in development while AT&T was full hands-on for DirecTV because of the "one fits all" approach whether you like it or not approach they had.

I do hope the new co-owner comes back on with full receivers with the new tech. I want my separate recording lists and if one box goes down (or just unplugged from power) it doesn't turn everything off.

The info on the back of the adapter is "Directv Connected Home Adapter   DCAU1R0-01"

I just received 3 Gemini boxes, replacing my Genie Mini...Are they compatible, i.e. If I install only one (1) Gemini will the other 2 Genie minis still work in my home?

Thanks!

Yes, the other remaining Genie minis will definitely still function with the presence of a Gemini.

What do I get from Gemini other than a different user interface? I already have smart TV's with App's. so I don't see any increased value there? It doesn't seem worth the risk of new product issues for no realistic return.

Smart TVs with apps often have lag compared to a dedicated box. Many are known for being behind in software/firmware updates.

Doesn't have to be a box from DIRECTV STREAM, you can use a Roku or other such streaming device.

Those apps are for DIRECTV STREAM. This is the forum for DirecTV (satellite) which must have a receiver/client as does not support app to TV.
