Is the nomad device the best solution?

So why would I pay another $150 for another device on my network? I think that Directv having the feature of being able to download (live-stream is even better) programs that you've recorded from the DVR to devices such as PC's, Macs, iPad/iPods/iPhones, Androids, and Blackberrys, would be VERY cool! i just think I don't need to have another device and have Directv charge me for this feature. Why can't you upgrade the firmware/hardware on the DVR's to perform this feature? And at no extra charge to the customer? I think if you had that solution, then Directv would indeed make a very significant technological statement and achievement worthy of even the late Steve Jobs! Instead, we have to pay $$ for another device that doesn't even do live streaming.  A device that's 1.5 times more expensive than the AppleTV? ugh! Please re-think this design! Can anyone give me technical reasons why Directv chose to do it this way? Cause I just DON'T get it!! --Jason

The Nomad is not a live streaming device and that's what makes it different, and in certain cases much more desirable, than the other devices you discuss.  With the Nomad you can load a Laptop for long car or plane trips where no Internet connection is available.  Of course all of us would like all of the possible features available anywhere put on one device at no cost but unfortunately it doesn't work that way.

I recently made an auto trip for a thousand miles down the I-95 corridor.  Although there is solid cell coverage the entire way, there were huge spaces between the metro areas where there was no G coverage.  This rendered the iPhone toys useless much to the dismay of the teen-ager in the back seat.  Next time we go the laptop will have it's attached Passport drive loaded for bear.

Setting aside the cost, the Nomad is hampered by the fact that it takes the full time of each program to do it's thing and the fact that you need 2 devices to accomplish it. Then there is the issue that, other than a laptop, most mobile devices are limited on space. You also are restricted to 30 days of watching a program. This is an inconvenience to juggle all this. Now if the Nomad could be removed and used as a storage device to USB into a computer or Wi-Fi to a mobile device, then it might be worth the $'s or even a bit more. This device doesn't reflect the cream of current technology but will be adopted by some despite that because, although it's crippled, it fills a gap that no one else can for Directv programing...not unless you want to get a standalone DVD recorder and cart around a mini DVD player. There are probably other geeky ways to accomplish this task but for the majority of people, not feasible. Overall, it would surprise me if this becomes a big seller. It's not really 'relevant' tech for many mobile users who are getting used to real 'On Demand' even when it too has it's limitations.

Good call, jogordo.

I hope Directv gets the message that we don't want to spend another $150 for something we should get for free. Hell, TIVO has had tivo-to-go for years which does the same thing the nomad does. Pretty lame that they want to gouge us for more money. I like the nomad, and would like to have it for my iPad (even with the limitations it has), but will hold out for a discount.

With the Vulkano, can I transcode shows that I've already recorded on my Directv DVR to my mobile device (like the nomad)?  Or do you have to setup a recording on the Vulkano itself and then transcode the Vulkano recording to the device?  As far as I can tell from the website, it's the latter....but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

If I could transcode an already recorded show to an android device, AND stream shows (a la slingbox) all in one device, that would be ideal.

Thanks.

You have to record the show to the vulkano first

Thanks.  Considering I already have a slingbox for streaming, I think nomad probably meets my needs better than the vulkano.........that is, when they get android support. When is that coming?  Hopefully soon.

OK, I've rechecked again, also for my own knowledge. For me it, it is.

1) Nomad is getting a Live stream capibility called "Watch Now" that doesn't work yet.

(At least not on my WiFi Windows 7 laptop & Cat5 LAN by 02/04/2013)

2) Nomad is an optionaldevice for taking a show from the DirecTV HD-DVR's storage with you by preparing it out of sight so you can still watch and record other programs at the same time. You can then connect by WiFi or LAN and download to your portable at the speed of that connection to your network. The $150 USD once and nothing per month is less than I've ever paid for any VCR or DVD recorder I actually enjoyed.

3) ALL the other optional devices/solutions require you to play the show from your DVR while it captures the output.

This requires an additional DirecTV "client" or reciever on my account to monopolize, control and pay an additional monthly charge for.

In addition:

TiVo® is an additional DVR (and monthly subscription service fees totaling) about $900 for just until it breaks.

vulkano is also an additional Box to buy. $100+

Slingbox is similar.
